A Single Work, Split Between Ocean and Wall

Each Surf + Board is a unified artwork: a custom surfboard and wall-mounted canvas, laminated together using The Chandelier Technique. When the board is removed to be surfed, it leaves behind a permanent silhouette in negative space – a ghost outline that mirrors the board's exact shape and position.

The board accumulates wear and patina from use in the ocean, while the wall piece remains untouched. It is one creation with two trajectories.

HOW IT WORKS

Laminated as One,
Separated When Needed

The surfboard and canvas are created simultaneously, bonded during the resin lamination process so their designs align perfectly.

A proprietary mounting system – engineered to preserve the structural integrity of both board and canvas – allows the board to be lifted cleanly from the wall without damaging either piece.

The negative space left behind becomes its own artwork: a silhouette that frames where the board once rested. When the board returns from the ocean, its evolving surface – marked by saltwater, wax, and use – contrasts with the pristine wall piece, creating a visual record of the board's life in the water.

THE COMMISSION PROCESS

Built to Your Specifications

Every Surf + Board begins with a consultation. Paul discusses your surfing style, typical wave conditions, height, weight, and performance preferences to shape a board tailored to your ability and goals. You then collaborate on the visual design: color palette, gradient direction, scale, and how the piece will fit your space.

From initial conversation to final installation, the entire work is executed by Paul in his Rockaway Beach studio.

Timeline typically 3-6 months.

Paul can install the piece on-site or provide mounting instructions for remote installations.
