EDITION 1 - COLOR INTERSECTS
The Intersections of Shape and Color
“The overlapping third color on deck is perceived, while on the bottom, both colors are mixed together to present its true tone.”
13 boards · Sold Out
What happens in the space between colors? Edition 1 investigates the illusion of a third hue created when two transparent tones overlap. On the deck, the in-between color is perceived through precisely layered resin. On the bottom, pigments are physically blended to reveal their true mixture. The design was governed by a strict rule set: two shapes must intersect, neither subsuming the other, forming only triangles, squares, rectangles, or parallelogram, creating the groundwork for the studio’s chromatic research.
EDITION 2 - A VISUALIZED KOAN
Philosophy Rendered in Resin
“One of the most popularly quoted koans is, “what’s the sound of one hand clapping?” When I read this cube’s descent into dissolution, I am reminded of koans and the way they fall off without a goodbye.”
13 boards · Sold Out
Edition 2 translates contemplative philosophy into physical form. Inspired by Zen koans - paradoxes used in Zen practice to transcend logic - each board interprets this profound tension through color, shape, and negative space. The collection is a material meditation on questions that have no single answer.
EDITION 3 - STRIPED RESIN GRADIENT
The Birth of the Chromatic Resin System
“There is something so nostalgically evocative about brightly colored stripes for me: a soft, summery easiness to it.”
13 boards · 42 stripes each · Sold Out
Edition 3 marked a technological turning point. Laminating a surfboard is a performance of speed and precision: a physical dance governed by chemistry and time. Using a custom-designed and engineered contraption, Paul J. Schmidt suspended 42 individual resin stripes above each board - 21 hand-mixed gradient colors and 21 clear dividers - and applied them in a single, controlled pour. This was the first application of the Chromatic Resin System, a groundbreaking technique that forever changed the direction of the Paul Surf studio.
