Limited Explorations in Form, Color and Technique

Limited Explorations in Form, Color and Technique

Each Paul Surf Edition explores a single concept across thirteen handmade surfboards. These limited series serve as Paul's creative laboratory – testing new techniques, investigating aesthetic questions, and pushing material constraints. Past Editions have explored color theory, philosophy, and the development of The Chandelier Technique. Once an Edition closes, that concept is retired.

You work with Paul to specify your ideal board dimensions and performance needs, but the design is entirely his choice – a surprise revealed at completion. For full creative control over both shape and design, see Custom Surfboards →

HOW EDITIONS WORK

An Accessible Entry Point with a Twist

Paul Surf Editions offer a unique opportunity to commission a custom surfboard at a fixed price of $3,000 – significantly below the studio's typical custom work, which start at $5,000. The process is collaborative in shaping but follows a distinct model: you work directly with Paul to specify your ideal board dimensions, performance characteristics, and surfing style. The design, however, remains entirely Paul's choice – a surprise revealed only at completion.

THE PROCESS:

  1. Join the waitlist for the next Edition announcement.

  2. Receive notification when a new Edition opens (13 spots available).

  3. Consultation with Paul to discuss your surfing needs and board specifications.

  4. Paul creates all 13 boards simultaneously over several months, each with a unique design within the Edition's theme.

  5. Unveiling event where all boards are revealed together – attend in person or arrange shipping.

You can indicate colors you'd prefer to avoid, but otherwise, the surprise is part of the experience.
Past Edition holders describe the reveal as one of the most memorable parts of the commission.

EDITION 1 – COLOR INTERSECTS

EDITION 1 –
COLOR INTERSECTS

The Intersections of Shape and Color

“The overlapping third color on deck is perceived, while on the bottom, both colors are mixed together to present its true tone.”

13 boards · Sold Out

What happens in the space between colors? Edition 1 investigates the illusion of a third hue created when two transparent tones overlap. On the deck, the in-between color is perceived through precisely layered resin. On the bottom, pigments are physically blended to reveal their true mixture. The design was governed by a strict rule set: two shapes must intersect, neither subsuming the other, forming only triangles, squares, rectangles, or parallelogram. This Edition established the foundation for the studio's chromatic research.

EDITION 2 – A VISUALIZED KOAN

EDITION 2 –
A VISUALIZED KOAN

Philosophy Rendered in Resin

“One of the most popularly quoted koans is, “what’s the sound of one hand clapping?” When I read this cube’s descent into dissolution, I am reminded of koans and the way they fall off without a goodbye.”

13 boards · Sold Out

Edition 2 translates contemplative Zen philosophy into physical form. Inspired by koans – paradoxes used to transcend logic – each board interpreted this tension through color, shape, and negative space. The collection became a material meditation on questions with no single answer, exploring how visual language can express the inexpressible.

EDITION 3 – STRIPED RESIN GRADIENT

EDITION 3 –
STRIPED RESIN GRADIENT

The Birth of the Chandelier Technique

“There is something so nostalgically evocative about brightly colored stripes for me: a soft, summery easiness to it.”

13 boards · 42 stripes each · Sold Out

Edition 3 marked a technological turning point. Using a custom-designed and engineered contraption, Paul suspended 42 individual hand-mixed gradient resin stripes above each board and applied them in a single, controlled pour. This was the first application of what would become The Chandelier Technique, fundamentally changing the studio's technical capabilities and aesthetic direction.
