Having an active and creative mind, paired with both long hours alone in a shop and a background in writing, you might think it wouldn’t have taken me so long to start one of these blog things. Sometimes our discoveries and thoughts seem quite unimpressive to us, by virtue of them already having been discovered and stabilized in the stores of our minds. I generally have this feeling, and tend to keep my thoughts to myself; however, with increasing regularity I’ve noticed the benefits of opening up the cabinet; how it can be an invitation to discover new territory together through dialogue with others, or as you’ll see here, with oneself.
What I pursue is a sober assessment of my experience of functional (as there can truly be no other) art, form and design, while maintaining a certain state of contemplative openness; which is to say, a space in which I don’t necessarily land anywhere or feel the need to convince anyone of anything, but can maunder a little and play. I’ll explore this surfing thing, my take on the culture around it and the objects I’ve devoted so many years developing the skills to create, as well as poetry and music and, god, what else? I’ll admit my experience of most surfers and the surf world has felt claustrophobically myopic; conversations tend to weakly circle around the forecast, wind direction, what your last session was like, the in- and out-of-water dramas of so-and-so. I hope this space spreads the wings a little. Let’s see where it takes us.
So, welcome. Hope you enjoy the jots.
