Day 2
Sunday
GLASS
Join your peers in the glassing room and watch every step of the glassing process, as Paul walks you through his unique and proven lamination method.
While we completely understand the excitement and eagerness to try the actual lamination yourself, that portion of the course will be a fully ‘watch and learn’ experience, due to the high-risk stakes of the glassing process. You will be able to have a go at a practice lamination (not on your board), and have a hands-on approach with other steps, like color mixing the custom color for your board.
What will be covered:
How to dress the shape with fiberglass cloth
Mixing resin tints with primary colors
Accurately measuring resin and catalyst
Tools required for lamination
How to do a tight, bubble-free polyester resin lamination
How to perfectly cut a lap
Grinding the lap and prep for second lamination
How to laminate a logo/pressed dandelion :)
Paste and hot coats
Symmetrical finbox installation
How to securely cap the box
How to ensure a smooth gloss coat
What to bring:
3m face mask with 6001 vapor filters
Close-toed shoes
Pants
Long sleeved shirt
Safety glasses
Notebook / Pen
How this segment of the course will be run:
Before you leave the shop on Day 1, each student will give Paul their final color/design choice for their board.
Just as with the shaping segment, your Glass day will be a staggered progression; each board will be prepped by Paul before you arrive. This will ensure you have the chance to see all the critical steps of glassing a board, and get to ask any questions that might come to mind.
By the end of Day 2, you will have seen every step that I take in the lamination room.
NOTE: Although our studio is set up with a high-end exhaust ventilation system, polyester resin is quite smelly (even with a mask on). Wear clothing you won’t mind potentially ruining… you’ll likely leave the shop with some resin on you somewhere!
