THE PROCESS
Mastering the Mercurial | A Synthesis of Disciplines
Resin is a notoriously difficult medium. Its liquid state and rapid curing times naturally resist controlled application, which is why conventional resin art is almost exclusively organic abstracts.
To break away from the expected, Paul J. Schmidt designs, engineers, and hand builds unique constructions that govern the flow of pigmented resin with mechanical exactitude. The process is a delicate balance of art and science. It requires complex calculations to manage pigment saturation, viscosity, and catalytic reactions, ensuring each color cures flawlessly without bleeding.
This obsessive level of control transforms the volatile nature of liquid resin into a predictable, deliberate tool for artistic expression, resulting in a glass-like surface, reminiscent of stained glass.
APPLICATION
A Canvas for Unrivaled Versatility
The Chromatic Resin System was born from the world of surfboard building, but its application extends into the realm of fine art. The technique is applied with equal precision to our heirloom quality surfboards and our large-format art pieces. Each commission is a unique collaboration, conceptualized and executed entirely by Paul J. Schmidt to meet specific aesthetic and purpose.
